A restoration project at the Bayon Temple - one of many such projects throughout the Angkor Archaeological Park

Maintaining and restoring the buildings and surrounding areas in the Angkor Archaeological Park has required constant effort because so many of the buildings are in critical condition - caused by the hot and humid weather, long term neglect, degradation of materials originally used to construct the buildings and looters. Some of the restoration projects in Angkor have been: 1) Taking apart some temples stone by stone and reassembling them on concrete foundations. 2)Clearing forest. 3) Repairing foundations. 4) Installing drainage systems. 5) Installing additional support for rooms and walls. Agencies and countries (in addition to Cambodia) who have been involved in these restoration efforts: UNESCO, the World Monuments Fund, India, Japan, Germany and France and various artisans groups such as Artisans Angkor.
