The dirt road on the Spean Praptos Bridge - connecting Angkor to Phnom Chisor, Cambodia

We saw this bridge while traveling in SUVs from the Sambo Village Hotel in the Kompong Thom Province to Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Only local traffic (people, bikes, and farmer's carts, such as the one seen in this photo) are permitted on the bridge. We were traveling in SUVs to Siem Reap and had to bypass this bridge - a good thing for the preservation of this bridge.
This ancient bridge used to be the longest stone-arch bridge in the world, with its more than twenty narrow arches spanning 285 ft. The bridge was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. It is one of the few Khmer Empire era bridges to have survived to the modern day. Its Roman-like structural characteristics reinforce the impression that perhaps the Khmers were the Romans of Southeast Asia.
