Vacation bungalows at the Kibbutz Merom Golan in the Golan Heights.

The Kibbutz Merom Golan is in the northern part of the Golan Heights and was the first Israeli settlement founded in the Golan Heights, (July, 1977), following the Six Day War. After that war, Israel occupied the Golan Heights. Prior to that war, the Golan Heights was Syrian territory.

A kibbutz ("gathering," "clustering") is a collective community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic activities, including industrial and high-tech enterprises. The typical Kibbutz began as a utopian community, a combination of socialism and Zionism. In recent decades, many kibbutzim have been privatized and changes have been made in the communal lifestyle. A member of a kibbutz is called a kibbutznik.
