Belen Floating City....Sometimes

Belen Peru, a district of Iquitos, Peru in the Amazon Basin Rio Itaya.

A very poverty stricken area with a very large population that has very few facilities and infrastructure. It is actually becoming a tourist attraction in the area along with ecotourism.
I was able to spend a day there with a local resident guide.
These pictures were taken during the dry season while the river was at its low levels.
The houses are all built to float or on stilts as the water rises very high during the wet rainy season as can be seen on several pictures showing the high water marks.
For most residents, the river supplies the water for all of their basic needs.
