I had the pleasure of being invited to watch Kate and the rest of the two-time champion Balco's Finest in their 2012 quarterfinals in Yale's graduate school slow pitch softball Fall league. Great fun, and best of all, we went to the field early so I got to throw with Kate. A lot of talent on the field amidst the Chem/Bio PhD students & Post Docs on Balco's Finest - and my former DII Academic All American looked completely at home. Balco's Finest fell behind 2-0, but rallied for 6 in the bottom of the first, played great defense, crushed the ball, and cruised to something of a 20+ to 2 victory. Funny to see Kate "pitching" in slow pitch - while she still fields the position smoothly, I kept expecting her to come ripping off the mound and blaze a riseball under someone's chin! As she moved around the infield and outfield, it looked much more familiar! Plus, the love of the game is visible - regardless of the speed of the pitch. Naturally, I took some pictures ... and I appreciate the team's willingness to let me creep around their sidelines with the camera!
