MVU vs BFA Hockey '09

I got to see the MVU Thunderbirds take on the BFA Comets in Dec 09 and was treated to two strong periods of hockey before my toes got cold and I headed to the couch ... Dakota, one of Kater's nex gens, starts on defense as a Freshman for MVU and a couple of Emmer's former Lax teammates (Alli & Mordo) play for the Comets -- so I took some photos during the 1st period (before spending the 2nd chattering in the crowd). I was lazy and shot through the glass, so the images are crappy.

Photos inside a hockey rink are a lighting challenge! I crank up the ISO (the light sensitivity / film speed setting) to 2000 or 2500. The Nikon D300 with the 18-200 performs well in that extreme range. Going to my 85mm 1.8 lens is even better in low light, but I have to give up the zoom to do it, so I don't do it often. Then I shoot on shutter priority, using the fastest shutter speed which gets me an aperature reading in that rink -- typically 1/250th. This is fast enough to freeze most action while allowing a bit of blur on the puck and stick at times. White Balance is hit or miss in each rink. Typically, I shoot one test photo at each WB setting and then look to see which is the most accurate and use that for the game. Then, when I get home, I run them through Adobe Photoshop Elements (the $90 version of the Pro program) and tweak the lighting and white balance a bit and sometimes have to tweak the noise or sharpness to save an image. A 70-200mm 2.8 lens would be a huge improvement in the process, but that's a pricey lens!! Good Luck!!

I have a Nikon D60 camera and I'm taking pictures at high school roller hockey games standing in the penalty box for a clear shot. What settings do I need on Manual to get good clear shots while there is action going on?
