Trillium in West Virginia

LILY Family
2 - 4" flowers
The first 8 shots are the same plant, to depict growth stages. The trillium are abundant this year!!!
The ones with the dark centers are another species which I have been unable to identify, also abundant.

Red/Burgandy Trilliums are blooming in many parts of the lower elevations of Tucker County. Have seen hillsides covered with them. Beautiful!

We grew up in Rainelle, WV and used to play in the woods down near the Meadow River. In the darker areas of the woods in the spring, we found many trillums of various colors, from snowy white, white, with burgandy lines, yellows, soft pink, a deeper pink, a red and one that was almost black in color. We were always taught to never pick them, in the same area were many varieties and sizes of violets, from tiny to very large. Now they have developed that area and I am sure they are all gone.

Hey Phil - I live on Flat Ridge too. North Face just down the hill. I have several of the Purple Trilliums on my place. And P. Woody...is that 'quiet zone' P. Woody?

I have seen the red ones..to me they smell like fish. I would love to know the name of them.

I have a dark red trillium in bloom right now, 4/11/09. I live on Cheat Lake in Morgantown, WV. It is solitary, but was there last spring as well.

The red Trillium you refer too is also called wake robin, or stinking benjamen. The trilliums with the purple inside are all wake robins, even though they are a different color. They all have a stinking smell, of a wet dog.

Phil, please click the link in my comment below. I believe it is called a Purple Trillium.

I own property on Flat Ridge (Canaan) on the lower portion of the mountainside facing Allegheny Mt. I found a burgundy (solid colored) Trilliun. Any idea what it is - I have not been able to find on the internet.

Have you ever seen a red trillium? I have found some recently and cannot identify them.
