27-FEB-2010
Queenie and her youngsters
...when they first showed up the morning of the 27th. They came back in the evening for more corn, but have been mysteriously absent so far today (Feb 28th). Perhaps trudging around in all that snow has exhausted them.
27-FEB-2010
The Wildlife Barnyard
You'd think they would see the corn in the dish, instead of concentrating on the piles Frank dumped in the snow. The deer ultimately did eat from the dishes, but only two turkeys were brave enough to try.
27-FEB-2010
Turkey Quandry
There is so much snow, this group of turkeys seem a little perplexed by it all.
27-FEB-2010
The gangs all here...
When the turkeys show up (normally 16), the deer (we have 10 does and fawns here regularly) usually go up on the hill and wait until the turkeys leave. Not this morning...they were all pretty hungry.
27-FEB-2010
Queenie and young'un
The deer were having and difficult time getting around this morning.
28-FEB-2010
The tree "bridge" over our pond.
This photo may be the best example of how much more snow we have gotten in this latest event. This tree fell during a wind storm several years ago.
27-FEB-2010
Our Driveway
There is no way we are getting out of here at this point. Fortunately our wonderful neighbors came over with their four wheeler and plowed it later in the day. We have gotten yet another inch of snow since then. The dark patch of snow at the bottom is on the top of a low storage shed beneath the window.
27-FEB-2010
The roof avalanche
I was actually looking out the window when this happened. The photo was taken shortly thereafter. The snow is close to 30" deep on our front deck now.
27-FEB-2010
On bended knee
Prior to this event and since the Adirondack photo taken on the 19th, the ice slipped down some, and now seems fixed in place. There was no snow remaining on the railings before this latest winter onslaught.
27-FEB-2010
Close up of our "snow measurement" device
I use this table for potting plants the rest of the year.
27-FEB-2010
Looking up the hollow
They did say we got about 1 1/2" in the last 24 hours...what do you think?
27-FEB-2010
Our southern deck
...on the morning of Feb 27th. Before this latest event, there was no snow on the beams and railings, and the table only had about 3" left.
26-FEB-2010
Feeding time
It was snowing again...but none was showing on the radar. As a matter of fact, most of the snow we have gotten this go around hasn't shown on the radar. Nor has it been officially counted. The best I can interpret they say we got about 3-4" since the 24th. As you will see, we will have easily gotten 12+" by Feb 28th.
26-FEB-2010
Spikey and Wild Turkey
They couldn't find the corn that was buried beneath the snow. Frank had not put out the morning supply when they showed up.
26-FEB-2010
It starts all over again
It started snowing the evening of Feb 24th. Prior to that the snow had fallen off all of the branches, the deck beams and railings. Our drive still had a substantial covering of ice, but most of the snow had melted. Spikey and the turkey seem to be having a stand-off.
19-FEB-2010
Captive Adirondack
The seemingly perpetual ice has become one with the chair beneath the overhang.
14-FEB-2010
Snow is sticking around
We have had so many winter storms I have now lost track of the numbers. For the most part, we have had snow on the ground for the whole month of February as you will see.
11-FEB-2010
Queenie and her youngsters
Most of the recent storm has now passed, but we are still getting flurries. And it appears that we will for the foreseeable future.
11-FEB-2010
She's so cute...
And so far our efforts appear to be helping...all of our herd seems to be doing fairly well considering all they have been through so far this winter.
11-FEB-2010
Carolina Wren and Hairy Woodpecker
The suet will last a little while longer. I need to go refill it now (Feb 12th).
11-FEB-2010
Wild Tom Turkey
I managed to catch him before he left the frame.
11-FEB-2010
Lots of Wild Turkeys
We actually had 16 here at this time, but they never, ever stand still for a group photo. Perhaps this little snippet will give you the idea.
10-FEB-2010
Later that evening...
It rained first, and then the second snow came. A lot of the snow had slid off of the roof the night before (or was it two nights ago, I've lost track). There were really a lot creepy sounding noises in the night, but thank goodness we didn't lost power this time.
10-FEB-2010
Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpeckers, and Titmouse
The little male Downy is waiting his turn on the suet feeder...see the size difference? And yes...it is snowing again. The second part of the double whammy of winter storms.
09-FEB-2010
One more of the Raccoon
It really has quite the thick winter coat right now, and it sure needs it!
09-FEB-2010
Raccoon
He is frantically looking for corn buried beneath the snow...no wonder, the second winter storm in less than a week is approaching!
09-FEB-2010
Oh No, not the Raccoon again!
We thought it had left the area, since Frank secured our only remaining suet feeder. He had fixed it right before it snowed one time in January, and the next day we found it on top of the deck beam buried in snow...but intact. The raccoon had stolen the last two we had.
06-FEB-2010
One more of "Spikey"
The generator ran out of gasoline about 9 AM. Frank had to get all the gas from our only functioning vehicle, a 1979 Ford truck. The transmission went on our primary vehicle on Feb 3rd. Needless to say, it isn't fixed yet. At least they had the power back on by 4 PM. In the midst of this storm, I really don't know what we would have done. (Doesn't the little sparrow look really tiny?)
06-FEB-2010
"Spikey" close-up
It's finally getting a little brighter out there.
06-FEB-2010
Frank, my "Dear"
After starting the generator, and catching a few more zzzz's, Frank is performing his morning ritual of feeding the deer. It's still pretty dark out there.
06-FEB-2010
Our Deer
It was still pretty dark and snowing, but they want some food!
06-FEB-2010
"Spikey"
It was still pretty dark when he showed up, the camera wouldn't take anything but "blue" pictures. I believe it has to do with the low light and our thermal windows, notice the slow shutter speeds...and his antlers. They look identical to the tree branches!
06-FEB-2010
Second big winter storm!
It starts all over again, this time we lost power for 13 hours. This one of our pond was taken from our living room window, right after it got light. The power went out about 4 AM.
05-FEB-2010
Male Hairy Woodpecker
He has a much longer bill than the Downies, and is larger in size. His size is between a Downy and a Red-Belly, which helped me to identify him. Note that the snow has almost disappeared finally.
05-FEB-2010
Hairy Woodpecker
He is also a first for us. I have understood that they don't cohabit with Downy Woodpeckers, but that doesn't seem to be the case here this year. We also have 3-4 Downys here most of the day. The two species do seem to keep away from each other, even while sharing the same food source.
01-FEB-2010
Possum again
It looks like it is talking to the corn. I can't see any teeth, at least not like the raccoons have.
01-FEB-2010
Possum
Yet another first...the first time I have seen one in the middle of the day. It's actually pretty cute, isn't it?
05-JAN-2010
"Spikey" again
He is such a poser, and one of my favorite subjects.
02-JAN-2010
The Eight Point Buck
This is the buck that may be our beloved "Spikey". He is the only buck we have seen since hunting season. He certainly is comfortable with the rest of our herd. We have ten does (7) and fawns (3) that show up regularly for corn.
29-DEC-2009
Male Red-Bellied Woodpecker and Carolina Chickadee
29-DEC-2009
Male Red-Bellied Woodpecker
We are now using only one suet feeder. The birds take turns, or share if they fit, but most our happy with the leftover corn, or bird food thrown directly on the ground.
28-DEC-2009
Tom Turkey
This guy has the fattest beard I have even seen. He and the Jake below are regularly showing up with the hens.
28-DEC-2009
Wild Turkey
The turkeys have been coming on a regular basis...when they do, everything else seems to clear out. We have had up to 22 turkeys here at one time this year, it is very unusual for them to come this close to the house. I've only seen it at mating time in the spring in the past.
23-DEC-2009
Amazing icicles
Initially I couldn't figure out why the icicles were pointing towards the living room...then I realized the snow blanket was sliding off of the roof which caused them to curve inward.
23-DEC-2009
Sliding snow from the outside
We didn't get the fascia or gutters done...it may be a good thing, the gutter on the southern side of our living room is really a mess. This is the front deck, facing the NE.
23-DEC-2009
The snow blanket
We finished our roof over project this past summer...just in time as it has really helped. This is what we see from out bedroom.
23-DEC-2009
The Christmas storm arrives!
Boy did it ever! I have never seen a snow "rope" before. This hung in for at least 2-3 weeks. Our snow usually disappears in a few days. This was taken from inside our sunroom as you can see from the reflections. It is on the south side of the house facing the hollow.
20-DEC-2009
Female Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Our pair of Red-Bellied Woodpeckers have returned! We aren't putting out the feeders as we have in the past, but that doesn't seem to have deterred any bird activity. We decided not to encourage any overwintering this year to avoid the many window crashing incidents that have been so frequent in the past. The feeders also encourage the raccoons to destroy everything. The birds seem to enjoy the corn that the deer leave behind. There is never any corn left by the next morning...we have quite a large clean-up crew as you will see.
01-NOV-2009
The Raccoon kids again.
We only saw them for a few days. There were also 5 or 6 squirrels around, but I didn't get any decent photos since it was usually when the sun was too bright. As the winter has progressed we are seeing only one or two.
01-NOV-2009
Raccoons, a pair of youngsters.
The next week these two started coming around. Mama was keeping watch in the trees above.
26-OCT-2009
Raccoon...looking for corn
He/she decided to come down and check it out.
26-OCT-2009
Raccoon
We usually don't see raccoons during the fall/winter season, and certainly not during the day. We started to put out corn for the deer at the end of September, I guess the word got around.
21-OCT-2009
Mushrooms
OK, I cheated, this pblog actually starts in October. This is the first time I have seen this type of mushroom. They only lasted a few days, then turning black and inky.
