By the Side of the Road IV

A 17 year old boy, shot once in the head in his car, on a rural road not far from where I live. There is a lot of speculation about what he was doing out at 3 a.m., none of it good and much of it involving a drug deal gone very, very bad. Friends and family held a candlelight vigil at the spot the day after it happened. Whatever the reason he was there; whatever his behavior might have been in the past - all of that is forgotten in the sadness and waste of his death there in the field at the side of the road.

That definitely is the sense you get when you drive by one of these shrines. It's just a waste. You've photographed it beautifully, however. Crisp, because what it represents is very real. Muted color, because what it represents is somber. And the way the world tilts really says something about how it affects the people that were close to him.

The tragedy of youth is their mistaken belief that they are immortal. Sad commentary.
