Pied Oystercatchers

Iluka, north-coastal New South Wales
You’ll likely have noticed the readable leg flag on one oystercatcher.
I reported this to the Australian Bird & Bat Banding Office. In reply, they sent me the known history of the bird.
It was banded as a young bird in Sept. 2010 over 200 km away from its current location.
In April 2011 it was sighted 16 km away from its banding place.
In Oct. 2011 it was sighted at Iluka, and has been seen many times since then always at Iluka.

Great picture and really interesting to read the history of this bird through the ringing data. They are long lived!

Well traveled birds! We have black oystercatchers around here, without the 'pied' and often not quite as dark.

What an amazing story, not least for the age of the oystercatcher. Very interesting, and a great shot too. V

quite the itinerant species...good catch of this pair...our local oystercatchers are similar, except don't have the white belly..

It’s so neat to find out about its wanderings and the distance covered to this site. Great photo of these remarkable birds.
