Monarch chrysalis

I used to wonder why so few Monarch caterpillars made it to pupation, as I could rarely find one on the foodplants.
Then one day I noticed 17 chrysales lined up on my shadehouse! The caterpillars migrate, probably at times up to ten metres from the food plant.

See previous photo for the adult.

other sizes: small medium original auto

We've kept a chrysalis three times and watched as it changed to a Monarch. It's a wonder to see and photograph.

Such an extraordinary shape - I hope the netting won't be a problem when they emerge !

Fascinating they should choose a place so foreign from a living plant! Glad you found them though and hopefully you'll see all 17 adults!

17...that must qualify as a colony...that mesh seems ideal for hooking on...with luck you will catch them emerging too..

Success! How wonderful, particularly to hear that you noticed 17 of these on your shadehouse. Outstanding. V
