Day 4 Thursday Island

best viewed at original size.

Last of three views of Thursday Island; a pleasant town of 3,500 people on a pleasant hilly island of 350 ha. Known to the indigenous Islanders as Waiben. This is the major Torres Strait settlement.

I gather that there’s uncertainty about the origin of the name “Thursday”. But indicatively, perhaps, there’s a Wednesday Island and Friday Island nearby, though no other days of the week. Named by an early ship captain passing by?
