The city of Arequipa on the Pacific slopes of southern Peru is perched at 2,300 m elevation with Volcan Misti (5,800 m; last erupted in 1985) on one side and the Atacama Desert on the other.

Life is a gamble, but living so close in the shadow of Volcan - no could do! - has me wondering just what the population of Arequipa do to make a living at that altitude
