My photos fail to tell adequately of this great adventure: gliding quietly down beautiful river reaches; constant bailing of water (but we weren’t allowed to assist) and running repairs to the motor; staying overnight in the hut of a village chief’s parents (there were 7 village chiefs in village of c. 800 people); children at first hiding at the sight of foreigners then giving in to their curiosity; being asked (via our guide as translator) if it is true that we believed the world to be round – and how could this possibly be so? (I kid you not); at request presenting at the village school (a very rustic affair) the following morning so that all 150 children could be assured of the chance to see such a strange sight – and a man with a beard (me) at that; and finally the long journey back upstream to the more modern world from whence we came.
