I was recently on Elcho Island and the local women were eating it when ripe off the tree. I tasted one, it was great. I was told the Yolŋu name and by searching that name linked it to some Yolŋu artwork which gave the latin and common name. I then was able to match it to my photos. So yes safe to eat off the tree
Response to Guest: I haven't tried them. According to https://skipas.wordpress.com/native-plants/plant-d-f/euphorbiaceae/mallotus-nesophilus-yellow-ball-flower "The yellow fruit turns translucent when ripe, at this stage it is edible", However, I hesitate to endorse this as a number of Australian native plants have fruit that are poisonous unless pre-treated - Aboriginal food gatherers often new how to treat such fruit.
