# Glasshouse Mountains #

A series of volcanic plugs created about 26 million years ago and now exposed by erosion of the surrounding softer materials. The rocks are trachite and rhyolite.

In Aboriginal mythology, the mountains are a family, and their names have been retained in the current names of each mountain.

The Glasshouse Mountains were named by James Cook, captain of the ship bearing the first Europeans to see the mountains. He observed them from the ocean to the east and named them for their resemblance to the glass-making kilns of his native Yorkshire in England.
