“Color. Simplicity of shapes and form. And then, more color."
"That’s the answer I usually give people when I’m forced to describe my work.
And I say “forced” because I think that art should be looked at and experienced
but not necessarily discussed and rarely, if ever, explained.
Asking an artist why he or she did something is tantamount to asking a mathematician,
“How long is a piece of string?” The answer you will get may be correct, but you’ll never understand it!
I work in three media: painting (both acrylic and oil), printmaking,
and most recently photography, which I call ARTography®.
My art is best described as a visual road map of my wanderings, real and imagined.
Working mostly from my personal reference photos, I re-compose, abstract
and eliminate the extraneous details in my compositions, because I believe that sometimes
you can see more, if there is less to see.
This process allows me to create my own reality."
I grew up in Champaign, Illinois, received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
from the University of Illinois, and upon graduation I moved to the Kansas City area.
After moving from the rolling countryside just east of Liberty, MO,
I lived in St Petersburg, FL overlooking Boca Ciega Bay, a bay of Tampa Bay.
In the summer or 2020, I moved to Albuquerque, NM. Then in 2025, I moved back to St Pete.
There, I fish, sightsee, visit my family, read voraciously, do some art,
and write about things that interest me or, as some suggest, just nonsense.
My background of over forty years in advertising has imbued the art with a graphic,
bold, get-to-the point approach which you’ll sometimes find humorous,
other times thoughtful, but always bright and colorful.
Now retired, I have exhibited at festivals and galleries from New York to Washington state,
California to Florida, and most places in the middle.
I spend most of the time discovering new places to go, new things to see,
and new ways to create my own “reality.”

Hi Charles, I bought one of your abstract Marilyn Monroe prints today at an estate sale. It is beautiful and yes I agree less is more.

I met you at the Sona Artfair today. I was really impressed with your work as you are far ahead of me in learning to produce a way to combine my art with printing. Please view my web site www.gwenwelch.com. My underwater paintings are from my years as an underwater photographer. I have a studio in my home at the Bluffs in Parkville. Do you teach classes?
