I've only been to Kauai twice, once in the summer of 1978 on an interisland tour, and again in the summer of 2009 which was primarily to visit an old friend from Hialeah and his family in Kapaa. My friend passed away less than 5 years later from prostate cancer and I have a Memoriam page for him at https://pbase.com/donboyd/mem_frank_sullivan . I also wanted to show my wife and daughter Waimea Canyon because I was really impressed by it back in 1978. Unfortunately my wife came down with a 24-hour stomach flu and she stayed at the hotel all day but our youngest daughter got to see it after the fog lifted.
Kauai is a beautiful island and both visits were far too short to see more than just a sampling of the island's beauty. On my 1978 visit we stayed overnight at the Coco Palms Resort which was absolutely beautiful and surrounded by the tallest coconut palms I've ever seen. According to internet sources, the Coco Palms was the first resort to open on Kauai in 1953 and in its heyday it was frequented by many celebrities. The hotel was destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992. It was featured in the Elvis Presley movie Blue Hawaii among other movies. Hyatt is supposed to be doing a complete reconstruction of the hotel starting sometime in 2017 with a late 2018 opening but that will probably be delayed.
I have plenty of photo prints from that 1978 visit and someday I'll find them in the boxes upon boxes of old photos that I have and maybe I'll have the time to scan them.
