I spent a lovely (not!) nine weeks in Cape May at the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center from June 6 to August 12, 1966. It was chilly and foggy in the mornings early in my stay and blazing hot in August when temperatures were over 100 degrees with no breeze and they suspended training for a couple of days. After I was released from Coast Guard active duty in July 1970 I visited again for an hour or so in August while on an 7,500-mile road trip vacation and then again on August 18 and 19, 2011. The training center and Cape May have changed over 50 years like virtually every place but Cape May has a lot of charm. The summer season has too many people and cars jammed in traffic and our next visit will be either in the late spring or fall to avoid the crowds. Motel rates should be considerably lower when they're not full of vacationers.
