The legendary and long popular Rick Shaw (Jim Hummel) retired on May 11, 2007 after 51 years on the radio, the last 47 years on South Florida radio stations. His first job in radio was in 1956 in East St. Louis, followed by jobs on Omaha and Denver radio stations. Rick moved to Miami in 1960 and he started with Miami's WCKR 610AM (later WIOD). He moved over to WQAM 560AM Tiger Radio in 1963. He pulled a radio ratings historical high of 54 in 1964 while at WQAM meaning that more radio listeners were tuned into his show than all the other Miami stations combined. Everyone remembers him playing Ray Peterson's "Goodnight My Love" as his show's sign-off song and he played it again on his farewell show on WMXJ-FM. Rick had a Saturday Hop afternoon TV show on Channel 10 in the 60's, and in 1965 "The Rick Shaw Show" started every morning Monday through Friday on WLBW-TV Channel 10, an MTV-type show featuring the latest rock and roll songs being lip-synched by local performers in South Florida scenes. In the 70s Rick moved to program director at RKO's WAXY-FM 106.7 because FM stations were overtaking AM stations. He finished his on-air career at WMXJ-FM "Majic 102.7", the only oldies station in South Florida. Rick will continue his activities with the Majic Children's Fund, a worthwhile charity that assists needy children especially around the holidays. Thank you Rick for many great memories during our lifetime, especially when we were teenagers in the 60's. May you have a long healthy and happy retirement. I believe that Rick is still available for a short presentation at South Florida high school reunions. He gives a short speech and then shows a really dramatic fast-paced video full of images of news events and music from the 1960's.

I'll never forget Rick picking me to do a lip-synching song in 1965 - of the Rolling Stones tune 'Satisfaction' on 'Saturday Hop'. A big mistake! I was teased by all my friends at Northland high school thereafter. Rick'll be at the Newport Hotel on October 13 and 14th for the Miami Nolan 50th reunion of the class of '67. We're all signed up and ready to have fun.

I lived in Miami in the early 60s. I followed Rick from WCKR/WIOD to WQAM. He may hold the record for the number of years in one market. One time while he was at QAM he invited his listeners to bring an odd object to the station which was then located in the Shine-Macallister Hotel in downtown Miami. There were no security problems in those days. I brought him a large orange sock (without a matching sock) and a record on how to teach a parakeet to talk. He actually played it on the radio. He and I were both born in the city of St. Louis. I'm still fascinated with the radio business and he is still my favorite DJ. I hope he is still around.

Bill, I believe that Rick can still be hired for South Florida high school reunions and he is well worth whatever he charges. He gives a short speech to the audience and then plays an awesome fast-paced video that contains images and video from news events that happened during our high school years in the 1960's while short clips of music from the 60's plays in the background. I saw Rick do this at my wife's 1971 North Miami Senior High Reunion at the Fontainebleau Hotel in August 2011 and it was very well received by the reunion attendees. He sticks around long enough for folks to come up and chat with him for a minute or two each and he is very cordial and receptive to everyone. I was born here in Miami in 1956 at Mercy Hospital& even as a little kid I listened to both WQAM 560 tiger radio&WFUN 790 am radio! I remember that "Goodnight My Love" song right before the "news"! We had old vacuum tube radios&I was fascinated of their orange glowing at night! I remember some men in deep bass voices saying R.I.C.K, R.I.C.K,R.I.C.K Oh Shaw, with someone beating a bass drum in the background! I remember the am radio stations playing instrumental pop music! In the late seventies early eighties all rock&pop music was totally lyrical!!! I believe WFUN 790 went off the air in 1976 but when WQAM did??? I saw a news piece about fm radio taking all pop&rock music in 1976&it seems that Rick was being interviewed!!! It was one of the three main tv stations of south Florida in the mid-seventies!!!

I grew up in Biscayne Park from 1953 thru 1972. Every Sunday night I went to the North Miami Armory dances from 1964 thru 1966. Then started going to the "Place and the World". Then the "Image" in Sunny Isles. Does anyone remember Chuck and Hank who used to stand in and sing and do flips on the stage at the NM Armory dances? Chuck was a dive instructor at FL State Univ. I believe.

I did news in Miami in the 70's and 80's at WINZ and WAXY. Worked at WAXY twice, second time with Rick as program director. One day he said "Don't give a time check at the top of the hour." That was because we were automated and a time check might not be right on. I gave a time check and boom I was fired. No warnings or anything. That was Rick Shaw. I learned a lesson. Anyway, I later joined the Associated Press as Broadcast Executive and retired 20 years ago. Saw Rick at my 30th Miami High reunion where he produced the thing. I liked to listen to him more than working for him.

I got to work with Jim a lotta years ago, to create an improv comedy/music video program. This was 'way before MTV, so we were creating our own. It was zany at a time when zany got called "psychedelic." What a great guy to work with; focused, intelligent, and a lot of fun. Like a lot of us here, I grew up listening to Rick Shaw, and 'Goodnight, My Love" remains a favorite to this day. But I'm glad I got to know him off-mic too, and to work with him. Hey, Steve Marcus!! We're still alive, man.

I moved to Miami on Christmas 1977. Rick was already a legend, having done NuVinyl commercials nationally. Not only was Rick a deejay at WAXY at the time, he was also the program director. In 1981, I won some tickets. I rode my bike to the station to pick them up. Luckily, I had a chance to talk to Rick. At the time, there was no overnight deejay at the station. As a result, I changed stations overnight, usually Y-100. It actually helped me win music one time. Anyway, I called WAXY and let it ring for a very long time. Eventually, the engineer answered. I said the station needed a live deejay and she said I should bring it up with Rick. So I did. He politely told me that it would cost money. I insisted that I changed the station and that others did too. By keeping me and others, ratings would go up, and so would ad revenues. Magically, and quite suddenly, the same engineer was now the overnight deejay. When the noontime deejay moved on, this same engineer turned deejay then got the midday spot. I never did get any agent fees for helping get her her very first on-air gig. To tell how legendary Rick is, I ran into some deejays for a Washington, DC oldies station. They, of course, know who Rick is. Now I live in Portland, OR. One particular local legend knows Rick, and even some younger ones are in awe of him. There is a bit of controversy with two of these younger deejays in Portland. Without notice, they were canned from their very popular morning show. Using my lessons learned from convincing Rick to promote an engineer to deejay, I reasoned that this would ultimately backfire in that particular director's face. He believed differently. Ultimately, every single thing I stated would happen DID happen almost as predicted. Thanks to my personal experience with Rick, I learned that not only did I know what I was talking about as a high school senior, but Rick ultimately listened to me and proved me right. This also showed some of Rick's incredible wisdom as a manager. Now maybe I chose the wrong profession. Maybe I can use this example for my MBA thesis some day. Thank you, Rick Shaw, for some wonderful memories.

Thank you for posting that question, guest. I'm sure it was Ray Peterson's version of the song and Rick was responsible for that song becoming a hit all over again as I recall. In the late 80's I went to a reunion of the 'QAM disk jockeys at War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale, a year after the reunion at Biscayne Baby in Coconut Grove, and Ray Peterson was there in person to sing the song. Somewhere in my boxes is a VHS tape of that evening that I shot with a full-size VHS camcorder plus 35mm still photos. Don

Wasn't Rick's signoff Goodnight My Love by JESSE BELVIN (not Ray Peterson)? I remember when Rick's format was moved to folk music (was that on WCKR?) and someone called in to ask "Aren't you going to play "Goodnight My Love" anymore?" and Rick said "I guess not." That was sad but I think he changed station shortly thereafter. Of course I could have it all wrong. Thanks for putting this together.

Listened to Rick Shaw on WQAM all thru the 60s, loved his show. Once, I and 3 other hoodlums were amusing ourselves by faking hit & runs in a residential area off Sunrise Blvd in Ft Lauderdale behind what is now the Galleria Shopping Center. We had two cars, the 1st dropped the 'victim' off, then I and friend came along in a 2nd car a couple of minutes later, locked the brakes up, squealing the tires while slamming my hand against the side of the car making a loud ‘thump’ sound. The 'victim' (name was Mark) would quickly lay down in front of the car and start moaning. People would come out of their houses, we'd say he jumped out in front of us, and then say we had to get him to the hospital and load him up fast. Well, low and behold doctors lived back there, and one time one wouldn’t let us touch our 'victim'. On cue, the 'victim' started begging for us to take him to the hospital. So, over the doctor’s frantic protestations, we grabbed our victim up, threw him in the back seat of my car, and hauled-tail out of the neighborhood. As we turned onto Sunrise Blvd we could hear sirens of cop cars coming. Several came from different directions, but they missed us. We decided to can that entertainment for the evening and headed to Jerry's Drive-In for a burger and cherry-coke. 30 minutes later, as we sat at Jerry's eating recounting our outing, and listening to rock & roll on WQAM, Rick Shaw cut into his programming with a special bulletin about cops in Ft Lauderdale looking for teenagers faking hit & runs in the Sunrise area. We decided we’d better go home and change cars, after which we resumed cruising the beach for the rest of the evening. It was a wonderful and memorable evening; and thanks to Rick Shaw for the heads up which led to us changing cars. Weren’t times great then…

Now someone has got to have pictures of all of those cruises when Rick Shaw wa with WAXY..... We had soooo much fun and for several years we went to Key West to Fantasy Feast. I often wonder whatever happen to a lot of those cruisers. So many of us were regulars and they also had SKI trips to Colorado although I am not a skier and did not attend those I really enjoyed the cruises. If there is anyone who went on these cruises please drop me a line and we can chat.

Later, they became the Shufflin' Kind and I dated a couple of the members. We stayed good friends for a number of years but fell out of contact. They were a great group of guys and my friends and I remember them fondly. GOOD TIMES!!!!

Steve Marcus Hi everyone. I meet Rick when I went to Norland High School, back in 65, and we were invited to Saturday Hop. While there Rick asked me and Patty Benson to lip sync a song on the show. After the show we were asked to wait around. The station owner had an idea to do a morning weekly show with kids lip syncing songs. The Rick Shaw Show on channel 10 was born. I was on the show the entire run. Learned about production from directors Ray Potts, Bill Dunstall and Chuck Stewart. A few years later Rick formed Miami Tele-productions with Sandy Tinsley. I went to work for Rick sweeping floors to directing. After a while started directing the Now Explosion TV series. A couple of years later I started Marcus Productions and for me the rest is history. A great history due to Rick. Started shooting commercials and tv shows. In 1976 I created and sold a tv series called Disco Magic that CBS stations picked up. Was sold in 75 countries. To make along story short, still have the company and have directed shows for Disney, Fox and Showtime as well as thousands of commercials. You can check out our site at www.marcusproductions.com. My husband recently turned me on to this wonderful sight. My name is Robin Whitney=Cromer. The Whitneys were well known founders in Cutler Ridge. WQAM and Rick Shaw; etal were a major part of our lives. I babysat for Rick a few times. The pool just inside the door was incredible. Anyway, my older brother Rick was with the Singing Hurricanes; Appeared on Jackie Gleason; my sister Pamela was major in sports and dancing; my brother Greg and Glen also; had a wonderful place called Son Of A Pizza (formerly Dino's) my brother Bobby became a Marine and was killed on leave one weekend by a drunk driver....I ended up being a front singer of my band, Robin and One Step Ahead and we had some great years. I am still searching for people we met during our tours. WQAM was THE BEST! Charlie Murdock was at the 30th Reunion of the Palmetto Class of '65 at the Biltmore in Coral Gables, alive and lookin' good! Anybody have any pictures of him? I also remember he came to the Cutler Ridge Shopping Center dances - the library later took over the spot down by the movie theater.

One of the listeners of my web radio stream sent me the link to this blog. I grew up on KXOK and WQAM and got a life-long love of radio from them. When I started a hobby station at Live365, I decided to re-create the '60's sounds of these great stations. If there's anyone here who would like to hear what Rick sounded like on Tiger Radio, or the great Johnny Rabbitt on KXOK, they're still on the virtual air at my Live365 station. I alternate days with KXOK and WQAM, inserting DJ airchecks, jingles, news and commercials between great oldies. It's my way of keeping the golden era of Top 40 radio alive. Just go to Live365 and search for Storz Starz if you would like to listen. Except for the Live365 commercials that I have no control over, it's purely a hobby for me, one I pay Live365 to let me do. Just wanted to let the folks here know if you are interested. The DJ's are all in about the same day part as back in the '60's, so at night on alternating days you can hear either the young Rick Shaw or the Rabbitt we all remembered from '60's KXOK.

I love these pictures, they bring back such memories..I used to dance for Rick Shaw on the morning shows and Sat. Hop. I had a couple of group of dancers, one included boys. What happend to Bill Dunstal? the last thing I know about him I think he and Nelda Rice were married. Keep up the good work and if you need any photos of the show or hop let me know. I grew up in Hialeah and still live here in Miami Lakes.

I was born in Miami and came of age in the 60s. I slept with a transistor radio next to my ear listening to WQAM until the sign-off "Good Night My Love." Rick Shaw and WQAM was an integral part of growing up in the early 60s in Miami. Back then I watched the construction of thePalmetto Expressway and Dadeland. Miami grew and changed, but Rick was always there. As today, music was MOST important to young people and listening to our rock and roll defined us as a generation of boomers. I just wanted him to know that there are some of us out there who have grown older with you and have fond memories of music and times "back when."

Roberta... the last I'd heard about Charlie Murdock was that he had moved back to OH many years ago. I was sorry to hear about Jimmy's passing. I babysat his kids a few times for extra money when in college. Ronnie Grant (nee Grantham, brother of New Orleans Saints player) commited suicide in the late 70's or early 80's. I won't go into the reason as Ronnie was a friend.

Judie... every night my boyfriend would call as Rick was shutting down for the night, and sing along with "Goodnight My Love". If my co-dancer friend and I were working with the boyfriend's band, he would end the night with that song. A few years ago we, the old (1966) boyfriend and I were put in touch with each other through a mutual friend. As we hung up the phone he sang the song!

Such great memories of Rick! That friend and I often danced on the show... not part of the audience. We got a special tour of the station when it was at the Shine. Then it moved to Miami Beach. I would often run into Rick and the others. Even babysat for Jimmy Dunlap. Robie was great. Ronnie Grant (brother of Saints player Larry Grantham) was fun to be around. Friend and I always stopped for breakfast at Irving's, next to the station, and Ronnie would order a bagel and a Dr. Pepper... yuck!

RE: Larry King... boy! do I remember him! My best friend and co-dancer, first met him at an event at some hotel. I can picture the conference room, but can not remember the hotel. It was some promotional event and my friend and I worked with the band that supplied the music. My then boyfriend, now ex husband, got to do "Student Day" at WIOD with Larry. A year later my boyfriend, a coworker at a bank my boyfreind worked at, and I, went and reposed Larry's car!

For those of you who don't know the "back story"... A young James Hummel arrived in Miami fresh from St. Louis Missouri around 1960 for a job at WCKR (WIOD during it's brief stint as a rock and roll station)... Program director "Biggie" Nevins met with him and James sai"Hi, I'm Jim Hummel". Nevins replied, "No you're not - you're Rick Shaw. I've always wanted a DJ with that name", and so was born the name that South Florida claimed for nearly 47 years. With the exception of the 1960's strike at WQAM that left all of their DJ's unempoyed for a spell, Rick has been on the air continuously from his WCKR South Florida beginnings. After WCKR and WQAM, Rick moved to WINZ, WAXY and then settled into the morning slot at WMXJ (Majic 102.7) for the remained of his broadcast days. Of course, we all remember the Saturday hop broadcasts from Channel 10, the original version of the Nu Finish Car Polish" commercial he did (they've changed spokepersons numerous times, but the word copy remains the same) and his manic on-air banter with the Lone teen Ranger and Tonto (mmm - that right!)... For you trivia buffs, "LTR", or the Lone Teen Ranger was inspired by an insipidly bad song by one Jerry Landis - a pseudonym used by none other than Paul Simon before his true talents came out... Try to picture Rick in the old McAllister Hotel studios, frantically cuing up records, preparing commercial copy to read live, watching the clock, cuing up the cartridges with the sound bites of Tonto, paid commercial and radio station jingles, and still coming off like this was no big deal... Radio (in the old days) was a JOB! Dum-de-dum-dum- WONDERFUl--W--Q--AM!!!!!

Donna, my buddy remembers the Warlocks but not individual members. He never attended the Hialeah dances but did go to the North Miami Armory and Ft. Lauderdale Armory dances. He hung with the "Birdwatchers" at Trader Johns though and used to take the drummer Eddy Martinez flying in his Cessna at Sunline Aviaton at Opa-locka Airport. He says Johnny Maestro (sp?) also hung out with them then - he was with the Crests and the Brooklyn Bridge. Sorry.... Don

My generation (I am 63) was so wonderfully influenced by Rick Shaw in such a decent , gentle way. We listened to him and followed his kind advice. We understood him and respected his wonderful attributes to the new community that was to become his new home. We embraced him as he embraced his new fans. It is hard to think of Miami and Rick Shaw as not being one and the same. He influenced my formative years as he did thousands of other Miami teenagers. I only wish that the teenagers in Miami today in our community had the same privilege as I did to have Rick Shaw as a role model for adulthood. Thank you, Rick, for everything. Dianne Glick
