The "Magic Screen" that came in those kits was most likely clear "cling-vinyl" - which adhered to any smooth surface by static electricity. The crayons were probably a softer wax than the standard Crayolas, thereby making them easier to wipe off the vinyl sheeting.

I think I used to use something clear that would stick to the TV screen because most families back then weren't into spending money on things like that.
