1962 - Marlene Harden, Miami News counselor, with a group of her Miami News paperboys

Hialeah, Florida

Left to right: Don Boyd, Chuck Haaker, ?, "Willy Wong" (what was his real name?), Marlene Harden and Pat Sullivan, second oldest of the five Sullivan brothers.

This image was cropped from an advertising circular that the paperboys inserted into all of their newspapers when folding them for delivery in Mrs. Harden's garage. Leon and Marlene Harden were customers on my Miami News route in Palm Springs Estates and as the area grew in size the Miami News decided to add another counselor to the neighborhood. Marlene Harden was selected and things were fine until I brought my new iguana one day and she asked what his name was and I told her "Leon", much to the delight of the other paperboys. She thought I named my iguana after her husband, which was true, and she split my route a couple of times after that because I had more customers than the other carriers. I finally wrote the top honcho at The Miami News about it and they sent an executive out to tell Marlene to stop splitting my route, which surely dismayed her. Leon the iguana later ended up on the Iguana Island, along with my other two iguanas, at Crandon Park Zoo.
