My first car was a 1950 Studebaker Champion. It was back (I called her "Black Beauty") and had a 90 hp straight 6 cylinder engine with overdrive. I took it to college and once drove it from Chicago to Miami in 23 and a half hours averaging 28 mpg. Wish I still had it. Being tapered at both ends, I never knew if I was coming or going.

My Dad had a gray one like this that was stollen from next to our house. It was such a rare occurance in those days that it made the newspapers! The police found it 2 wks. later behind a grove only 3 streets from our home.

This is the car my parents drove me home in from the hospital! My dad loved Studebakers. My parents - 83 and 81 - still have pix of the car on the beach near St. Augustine with all of us kids - two smallest in diapers - arranged along the side of the car.
