I'm surprised most of us don't have scars from using those skates with steel wheels. I used them on new concrete sidewalks in a new housing development and you could feel every bump on the sidewalk surface plus the wheels would often stop if caught in the expansion joints of the sidewalk causing you to fall face first. Plus, as mentioned below, the clamps would often cause the skates to fall off. Bad memories, haha.

Key used to tighten skate's clamp to sides of shoe. If skate was not tightened well, the skate would fall off while you were rolling down the street.

I fell and broke both bones in my left arm using roller skates that belonged to one of these keys in 1954! It was just weeks before I started 7th grade and blew my career as a majorette and band member.
