1968 - the entrance to the Parrot Jungle in South Dade

Miami, Florida


Thank you to former Miamian Dave Kleylein (William Jennings Bryan Elementary, North Miami Junior High, North Miami High, and Norland High Class of 1962) for contributing this image.

This area became part of the city of Pinecrest and the attraction moved to Watson Island where the Japanese Gardens used to be. In late 2007 the word "parrot" was dropped from the name "Parrot Jungle Island" so it is now "Jungle Island."

Parrot Jungle was my favorite place in the world EVER. I still have a poster on my wall from their 52nd year in 1988. I was very sad that it moved. The new Jungle Island is okay. I'm glad they still have parrots that kids can feed by hand. I've been a bird nut all my life. I still keep parakeets canaries and finches. Blame Parrot Jungle!

Went to Palmetto High 1964. We use to go over the fence at Parrot Jungle at night and wander around. Great times.

My Grandparents lived at 9000 Red Road which was walking distance from the Parrot Jungle. When visiting them, my Grandmother would point out all the exotic birds in the backyard. She said they were visitors from the Parrot Jungle. Their yard was wonderful and like a tropical jungle as well.

For most of my childhood we made several trips to Parrot Jungle. After returning to Florida after moving away for several years I was devestated after visiting the "new" Jungle Island. For me, I found it to be very un-natrual. As I strolled the grounds even the birds looked unhappy. Part of the adventure of going to the original Parrot Jungle was seeing the bird free fly through the trees. That no longer happens at Jungle Island, in my opinion they've sold out to appeal to the masses, instead of remaining faithfull to the individauls who would have gladly stayed faithful to Franz & Louise Scherr dream and continued to support "Jungle Island" dispite the transition from Parrot Jungle to Jungle Island.

I think Dante Fascell lived nearby, if I remember correctly. It's nice that the local town decided to turn the old Parrot Jungle property into a park, so you can still walk around and bring back old memories. It's very cool.

The new Parrot Jungle is nice too. It's one of my son's favorite places to go whenever we visit my family. No, it's not old school, but it's still a great day with the family.

Yet another sad occurrence for Miami, the Parrot Jungle's relocation from its historic site. No, it isn't the same. A lot more is lost than gained from leaving or tearing down beloved historic sites. "The Jungle" and is struggling to survive financially, which was the reason it moved. We're betting it closes.

The original Parrot Jungle was located at Red Road (SW 57 Ave) and 112th Street. It was across the street from Christ the King Lutheran Church - my home congregation where I grew up and was married in 1988. In the old days, the parrots would fly over to the church property that was filled with mahogony and oak trees (it was the former home of a famous senator who's name excapes me).

Just driving by the entrance got me all excited, as a kid in 60s/70s. And, they had that "yellow brick" road inside the entrance, that got us all singing "Oz" songs, and deciding which character we were.

I MISS THE OLD PARROT JUNGLE. THE OLD ONE WAS MUCH BETTER THAN THE NEW ONE. THE NEW ONE THE AREA IS MAN MADE THE OLD ONE LOOKED SO NATURAL. I THINK SOMETIMES CHANGE IS FOR THE WORSE.
