1959 - the Florida East Coast Railway Station in North Miami

North Miami, Florida

Thank you to former Miamian Dave Kleylein (William Jennings Bryan Elementary, North Miami Junior High, North Miami High, and Norland High Class of 1962) for contributing this image.

I did have the order reversed in my previous description (brain fart). The first drivers license station where I got my restricted license at age 14 was on the east side of W. Dixie Highway just north of 135th Street a block or two or three. I later went to the drivers license station in the old FEC rail station.

kinseeker: I can't even believe I reversed the order. I should have remembered getting my restricted license on W. Dixie because on my first driving exam I flunked because I shifted into neutral while coming up to a nearby stop sign driving a manual shift VW Beetle. The examiner told me to leave it in gear all the time and to change the gears when starting up. I passed the re-test a week or so later.

Don I think you have the order reversed. I got my first Drivers license in North Miami on 135th st in 1961. Then when I returned from Vietnam in 1971 I got a new one at the old train station in North Miami.

It is the drivers licence station at about 135th near Ivan Tors got my first drivers licence there in 1966 and later my cheaufeurs licence when I drove for White cab after I got out of the army in 1971. Your right you had to parrellel park right in front it was the last part of the test. The tracks were right behind the station.

The Seaboard Coast Line railroad station on NW 7th Avenue is long gone but they preserved the front of it. I believe it is some sort of juvenile detention center now but I'll get down there one day and take a photo of it. I drove by there after taking my daughter for a medical appointment near Jackson and didn't have my camera with me.

It looks like the place I got my first driver's license from in 1975. I had to parallel park right out in the front parking lot there. I remember the train tracks out back. It was down there near the Ivan Tors studios somewhere's I believe...

Part of an I Love Lucy episode was filmed here.
