1960s - the huge Royal Castle Commisary in Hialeah

East 9th Street, Hialeah, Florida

Thanks to the gent who sent this; I'll identify you when I find your e-mail. This huge commissary supplied South Florida's Royal Castles with their food. It was located just west of the railroad tracks separating Hialeah from unincorporated Dade County.

If I remember correctly Dad used to pull in and get a bag of 13 burgers for a dollar. (bakers dozen) He would throw them into the back seat of the car to us three kids and look out, Katie bar the door. Good good food. I recently ordered some at a Krystals and they had no pickles. I had to drive back and return them they didn't taste right. And 69 cents each. aaaaahhhhh. Wrong.

Yup, 15 cent burgers and cold birch beer served in a frost glass mug. I used to go to the RC at Palm and Okeechobee on Saturdays, during lunch break at dancing school. Remember the Fireman's Hall on 6th street, across from the fire station? That's where we had our dancing lessons. Good times, good times.

My Dad was a locksmith, and when I was 10 years old, I helped my Dad change all the locks in this building. I also got to see in the meat cooler!

I visited this Royal Castle facility in 1966 where my friend Wally Trychta worked. Wally was a graduate of ICS (1961) and attended Curley High School and Hialeah HS. He passed away in 2001. I also remember going to the Flamingo Shopping Center across the street and eating at the Flamingo cafeteria on Friday nights. Great memories.

When I was a young kid, in the 50's, I lived near The Royal Castle , and the Royal Castle Commissary, next Door, and I went to Both, Lots of times, all the time, and always enjoyed Royal Castle. My Brother, and I, and sometimes, with our Friends, would just Drop By, and Royal Castle Graciously Gave us the Tour, and My Hialeah Elementary School, one year, maybe 3rd Grade, took our class there, on a Field Trip. That Place was so Huge, and the Aromas, were Heavenly. They always Gave all Visitors; A Royal Castle Hat, Lunch, Of Royal Castle Food, Yummy, and Their Tour was So Impressive !!!!!! I Remember they even had; A Room that looked Exactly like a Royal Castle Restaurant, and they explained to us; that all persons Were Trained in that Room, Before they actually went to work in a Royal Castle !!!!!! I also Remember the Little Juke Boxes, on the Counters Of All Royal Castles, Where you could play Hit songs, for a Dime each, or 3 songs, for a quarter. Iwent to many othr Royal Castles, But This one By The Commissary, and Flamingo Plaza, was Closest to our House, and where we went, all the Time. My Family Loved Royal Castle.

I went on a school field trip here too! I remember it being COLD inside, very very cold. I LOVED Royal Castle hamburgers! Weren't they only 15 cents? Wasn't breakfast something like 29 cents, too? I hate birch beer however. But I could eat a lot of Royal Castles.

I used to go to flamingo plaza everyday with my brother and my best friend one day we were able to blend in with a group from a church and get into the Royal Castle commisary and I dont even think we were wearing shoes. It was a lot of fun we were given lunch and a paper hat.

This was on East 9th Street in Hialeah near the Flamingo Plaza. We use to love the aroma of bakery bread that issued from this place as we passed by. If I remember correctly, you could see the bakers through plate glass windows working inside as you passed by.
