1965 - the Dixie Drive-In Theatre at 14601 S. Dixie Highway (US 1), Miami
14601 S. Dixie Highway (US 1), Dade County, Florida
These images should be popular with the kids from the SW section of Dade County. They make one wonder how many youngsters fell in love, not to mention lust, at this fine establishment and ended up getting married?
As a kid in the early 60's we would ride our bikes there and than walk in thru the row of Australian pine trees (top side border parking lot). Usually bringing a blanket, we watched many a movie up front seating on the ground with the window speakers on both sides as a psuedo stereo. Nobody ever asked us to pay or bothered us. Later as a teenager with car I spent many an evening there. Used to drive in the exit (lower right) to avoid paying, but they got wise to that and I (we) stopped doing that after blasting out when a policeman approached the car. Paid admission by person, not car so often had friends in the trunk. My sister worked there for awhile at the Entry ticket booth.
Gail: thank you for posting your comment about the drive-in at NW 68th and 27th Avenue because no else seems to remember it. I went there more than a few times with a neighbor family with younger kids in the late 50's/early 60's and I recall seeing some Bridgette Bardot flicks which were pretty risque' at the time. The drive-in, which the name I can't remember, was near the giant Sears distribution warehouse that was there at the time.
Carey, thanks for posting your comments about the Turnpike Drive-In, which was just north of the former Master's Field on 27th Avenue. I couldn't remember the name before and I glad you mentioned it. That must have been scary going up the back of the screen.

The theatre at 132nd street & 27th ave. was called the TURNPIKE DRIVE INN , It was in Opa Locka.
I watched alot of movies sitting in the pine trees there or we all used to sneek in ,in the trunk of Jimmy Hardwicks 66' Chevell. We used to climb the latter up the back of the screen , boy that was high .You could see the beach from up there! you could also see cargo ships out at sea. Those were truley the good ol' days. Thats all I cn tell you Gail. ( Carey strickland)
