NE 1st Avenue and 10th Street, Miami, Florida

Thanks to Martha Pierson for this image. The Dolphin Hotel is on the left and Withers Storage on the right. NE 2nd Avenue, one block over, was one of Miami's major north-south thoroughfares for many years before I-95 was built in the 60s.

Those FPL Co. and Phone Manholes are as massive as they are decorative...definitely built to last the test of time. Amazingly, the building to the right is still a storage facility after so many years. (Uhaul).

I agree with Bill Windrem. I, too think that the Dolphin Hotel is actually on NW 2nd AVE. My grandfather, Walter Sczudlo who was a real estate agent in the 40's, owned and lived in the apartment building named June Apartments across the street from the Dolphin at the South end of the block.

That's an interesting observation about the manholes and I thank you for posting it. I wonder if they will survive in the same place when the county is forced by the federal government to replace all our water and sewer lines that have leaking into the aquifer at great expense to this county's residents?

Looking closely in the street, the manholes are still present today also. Makes sense. If it aint broke, don't modernize.

Thank you for the correction! I have changed the description and location to 1st Avenue.

According to the City Survey done by Sanborn Maps in 1947 This view is actually Ne 1st Ave looking south across the intersection of NE 10th st. The storage building on the right is still present, as is the fire hydrant pictured on the corner.

Is it possible that the photo with the Dolphin Hotel is actually NW 2nd AV. I worked in the FEDCO DRUG warehouse as a driver in 1969-1970 at 1040 NE 2nd AV. I remember the design of the hotel being on either Miami AV or NW 2nd AV; also, seems to be directly north of the Courthouse. I think I might have lost a side mirror from a truck to that building, driving to close to the curb.
