My mom drove me down US 1 probably about this far when I was about 7 (maybe 1962-4?) to visit a lady selling parakeets. This is the vista that impressed itself on me, it seemed dry and empty compared to coconut grove. And of course, those were the cars. My mother told me the lady had cancer, and I felt badly for her and a little scared. I can't remember if we bought the parakeet, but I think we did.

The railroad tracks are gone replaced by a busway/emergency road.Looking to the north now is tall buildings in front of Dadeland mall and behind Shortys. I forgot that it looked like this back then.
