1913 - Joe and Jenny Weiss at their seafood restaurant on the south tip of Miami Beach

Miami Beach, Florida view map

The origins of the world famous Joe's Stone Crabs. However, the date may be in error because HistoryMiami says: "On December 4th, 1920, Joe Weiss opened his owned restaurant called Joe's Diner. This was after Joe left his prior position as the chef at the Sunshine Inn because of a change in management. Joe's Diner later was renamed to Joe's Stone Crabs." I don't know how the state archives can be wrong but something is amiss here.

I am looking for someone having information about Joe Weiss in the Miami area around 1938. My Dad was born in 39. Joe was friends with Grace (Gracie) Schon? Any info would be appreciated. shawnanddonnamiller@yahoo.com

Many years ago while my dad was still alive in the mid-90s, I took him back to Joes for some crabs. I say "back", since my dad lived on So. Beach growing up, and unloading the boats when they came in with the day's catch was his very first job as an 8-yr-old in 1923. He mentioned this to our waiters that night, expecting some sort of positive response. All he got from a very supercillious NY refugee waiter was a "So?" and then, "What are you going to eat tonight?" My dad gave him his order and then just shook his head.

George and I were there three week ago. The jumbo stone crabs fell right off the shell and were very sweet.
What could
compare to Joe's home fries or garlic creamed spinach?
I can't wait to go back. Nita Kantor

What a place for stone crabs. Ate there many a time. What service by the waiters. Best key lime pie ever made. Fellow that made if for years died and no one knew
how he made it. The great grandaughter tries to make it. However have not been back since I left Miami in 1998.
