1970 - North Perry Airport in Broward County north of Miramar and west of the original Pembroke Pines

North Perry Airport, Broward County, Florida

I moved to the house in green on Shalimar Street after serving four years active duty out of town in the Coast Guard and this is what the area looked like. There was nothing west of University Drive except for the South Florida State Hospital and the Shell gas station at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard (now Pines Boulevard) and University Drive. I commuted daily either to Miami-Dade North Campus or to Hialeah and often used Pembroke Road out to the equivalent of NW 47th Avenue and then south into Dade County and it was totally undeveloped and rural. While I lived the four years in Miramar I saw both the City of Miramar and City of Pembroke Pines annex all the land out to U. S. 27 and I thought "how crazy!" at the time. I couldn't believe that the State of Florida allowed those cities to develop that far west and now we have the Kendalls of Broward with traffic and congestion galore.
