2017 - Obituary for Herb Tillman, winner of Hialeah Speedway's first race in 1954

Mooresville, North Carolina


Thank you to Michael Martin for contributing this obituary for his uncle Herb Tillman, an early pioneer of racing at Hialeah Speedway. A local driver, Herb was driving George Nelson's 1934 Ford coupe modified and won the opening day feature event in July 1954.

Herbert Allen Tillman
Herbert Allen Tillman, 87, of Mooresville, peacefully passed away on April 3, 2017 at his residence.

Herb was born on August 13, 1929 to Lee and Flora Tillman in Tarboro, NC. He was a retired member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #487 and a member of the Florida Trowel Trades Local #7 of Miami, FL.

Herb was also a retired NASCAR Modified race car driver during the 1950’s through the 1960’s. His racing career continued through the northeastern States, winning races and making loyal fans and friends that have continued to stay in touch with him through the years.

He was respected by all who knew him and always a true gentleman. He will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 65 years, Joan Tillman; daughter, Dawn Buskirk (Kevin) of Mooresville; son, Herbert Tillman Jr. (Sherry) of Pompano Beach, FL; grandchildren, Brad, Jennifer, Holly, and Lee; sister in law, Jean of Edgemoore, SC; nieces, Brenda and Linda; nephews, Bruce and Henry; and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Tillman and sister, Dolly Tillman.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prepare International, 1100 Pelican Ln. Clemmons, NC 27102 or to Hospice of Iredell County, 202 Williamson Rd. Mooresville, NC 28117.
