Thank you to Alex Delgado for contributing this great old image. On the left are billboards for the new Lovell Homes housing development known as Palm Springs Lakes with SENGRA's new development of Miami Lakes to the north of W. 84th Street/NW 138th Street and Hialeah's city limits. I had forgotten about the Phillips 66 station on the southeast corner of the intersection. A new Pizza Hut would later be built on the southwest corner of the intersection where the billboards are in this photo. Both the Pizza Hut and the Phillips 66 station were wiped out in the late 1980's when the new limited access Gratigny Parkway was built and W. 84th Street/NW 138th Street were moved to the south eliminating both businesses. We used to ride our bikes out here in the early 1960's and W. 12th Avenue was semi-packed dirt, rock and sand north of W. 68th Street, and that's after they took down the chain link fence that was in place for years that kept people out from going north on W. 12th Avenue. I remember really cute Charlotte Tidwell, a friend from my old Miami News paper route, riding on the handlebars of my bike with me out here in 1961 or 1962 when we rode bikes with another guy and girl or two. The girls wanted to see what was going on north of 68th Street and it was tough biking due to the sand spots and ruts in the semi-packed roadway and we had at least several wrecks during the trip up and back. It seemed like they were dredging rock pits everywhere west of 12th Avenue at the time all the way up to what became Miami Lakes.
