1960's - "When You Were My Girl" by Russ Samuel with The Vanguards and The Teacher's Pets on Art Records' AFS label

Miami, Florida

Thank you to a website visitor for the photo contribution and these details about Art Records: "Art Records was owned and operated by Harold Doane in partnership with Mitch Lebow. Starting in 1945 Harold Doane recorded many of the acts appearing up and down Miami Beach from his headquarters in the Cadillac Hotel. Later he moved his studios to Miami (NW 79th Street then NW 119th Street) and finally late in his career he located in Broward. Many local artists of the late 50's and the early to mid-60's recorded for Harold Doane and his labels, AFS, Art and Perfect. Just to name a few that I can recall there was Wes Hardin and the Roxters, Blind Blake Higgs, Roger Smith, Russ Samuel and the Vanguards, Trudy Lawrence, The Stereos and Big Ed Cooper." In a subsequent e-mail he states: "I did think of a few more names of local artists Doane recorded on AFS 45's: Mike Shaw had a local hit with a song called "Long Gone Baby" (on Art I believe), Kent Westberry, (teamed with Snuffy Smith and toured as "Kent & Snuffy"), The Teacher's Pets (recorded with The Vanguards and others), Tom Spurlin, Bey Ireland, and even "Happy Harold" Thaxton (TV & radio guy) recorded for Doane (Perfect Records).

As a Hialeah High grad (HHS-65) myself I am pleased to see your comment, Donna. Which Hialeah Donna are you? One Hialeah High grad excelled beyond belief in a field other than music or athletics and that was Bob Swanson from the class of 1965. He and I were both born in Brooklyn, NY in 1947 but he was serious about his studies and he went to MIT after graduating from HHS. In 1970 Bob obtained his B.S. degree in Chemistry and a Master's degree in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Bob became a venture capitalist and co-founded biotechnology giant Genentech 11 years after graduating from HHS. He and his co-founder, Dr. Herb Boyer, and their company developed state-of-the-art drugs for many previously untreatable diseases benefitting hundreds of millions of people. Unfortunately Bob died at age 52 in 1999 from brain cancer and Genentech is now a wholly owned affiliate of the giant Swiss pharmaceutical firm Hoffman-La Roche.

Thank you for posting, Donna. I wish you had posted your last name or maiden name.

I remember these guys and girls, I think most of them went to Hialeah Senior High School, I suppose they probably graduated from there also. I think most of the guys and girls from "KC and the Sunshine Band" also are Hialeah Senior High School alums. A lot of great talent came out of that school, not only musical but athletic as well, Charlie Hough, Bucky Dent, Don Malone, Paul Franks and Ted Hendricks just to name the ones that come to mind first.

I think Buck Trail belongs on that list along with George Symonette, Fifi Barton, Don Miller and Rudy Lewis. As well as Randy Luck, Rico Bertoni, Danny Bridge, Bob Bellows and Ronnie Kemper. They all recorded for Harold Doane at one time or another on one of his labels under the Art Records umbrella. He was a wonderful man who did a lot for the recording industry in the Miami area.

"Goin' Steady" sounds like a great song for an ExLax commercial.

I remember these guys playing at the North Miami Armory along with Neil Sedaka in the early to mid 60's. Sedaka's latest at the time was "I Go Ape" and the Vanguards' was "Goin' Steady".
