Hialeah, Florida

Jim Criswell is my wife's father and he taught metal shop and ground school aviation at HML from 1971 when it opened until 1977 when he retired from the Dade County Public Schools. He previously taught at North Miami Senior High School. He passed away in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1999.

Edward Pacificar is the student in the front middle looking downward at plans.

Scott, I'm sorry for the delay but sometimes comments slip past me on the site due to so many galleries and photos. Thank you very much for posting your memories of Jim Criswell and your nice comments. Congrats on becoming a Naval Aviator and an airline pilot too!

Edward, thank you for identifying yourself in the photo and for posting your memories and nice comments.

Scott and Edward, I have passed along both of your comments to Jim Criswell's daughters and son and the grandchildren so they can appreciate them also.

Don

That is me in the center of the photo looking down at the table in front of Mr. Criswell. Like Scott, Mr. Criswell took me on my first flight in a Cessna 172 out of Opa-locka. We went on a cross country to Port St Lucie, Bradenton, then back to Opa-locka. He was a great teacher and mentor not just because I got an A in his class. That cross country flight was when the flying/aviation bug hit me. I got my private pilot license and spent 21 years as an aircraft mechanic in the USAF. I'll always be grateful to him for helping me find my passion that has guided me in my adult life. Mr. Criswell thanks for sharing your passion.

thanks for posting all these pix Dan. I went to Milam Elementary, PSJH, and graduated from HML in 74. Moved out of Florida 2 weeks after graduation and have only been back to visit Hialeah a handful of times since-- so your collection really brought back memories. I was actually in Jim Criswell's aeronautics class in 74, and helped start building the BD-5 kit that I believe is shown on the work bench in this photo. As part of the class Mr. Criswell actually took me up on my first cross-country flight in a Cessna out of Opa-locka airport. He was a true gentleman. I later became a Navy fighter pilot, and have been an airline pilot for the last 26 years. So happening upon this photo was a real stroll down memory lane for me! Thanks for making that connection.
