1969 - surfers at the real South Beach between the fishing pier and the Government Cut jetty

South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida view map

The beach between the fishing pier and the jetty on the north side of Government Cut was the only area known as South Beach during the 1960's and the rest of the area was known as South Shore. Over the decades, the name "South Beach" has expanded all over and it now goes all the way north to 21st Street or somewhere in the vicinity to capitalize on the name and in another twenty years it will probably be up in Broward County to make it the world's largest one-name beach.

wow...memories..I surfed here 1968-1971 ...one of the few girls. sometimes the only one. I'm looking for 'Big Jim'...a buddy I met during that time frame. We said we'd come back in fifteen years but of course, we didn't...He used to say that the song ' Brown Eyed Girl' was my song....I wish I could find him, near 40 years later...Tall, lanky, good surfer..Always kind to me...So miss those days....and it's changed beyond recognition...sad....

Thank you for posting, Jack. I patronized your snack shack for a few years in the 1963-1966 time frame when my friends and I would go to South Beach for surfing, babe watching, etc. You undoubtedly served me numerous times. I even rode the bus to Washington and 5th Street with my skim board from west Hialeah numerous times when others didn't want to go and I damn near drowned there with a buddy in a rip current after a hurricane hit us while body surfing because all the surf boards were rented out.

I hope someone who remembers you sees your post and posts something on here. Thanks again for posting.

Thank you for posting, Marlyn, you are ten years behind me age-wise. Thanks for remembering the name of Bob's snack shack inside the track's lower level parking lot; no one has mentioned the name before.

Don,
Do you know who the young lady is in the photo?
Friend? Relative? Future wife?
