1965 to 1969, Friday & Saturday nights and Limbo contest. I remember a bathing suit
company close by the rink ...."CEEB OF MIAMI'' and across 27th Ave there was a bar
called, Brownies.

Rick, thank you for posting that information. What was the name of the band? Surely we have viewers on this site who were there and might remember?

Thanks to meticulous records kept by our manager, I can say with complete confidence that the band I played with performed at the Opa-locka Roller Rink on May 03 & 17, 1959. Both shows were hosted by
Bob Gaynor of WQAM Radio.

Can't believe I stumbled upon this. The names are so familiar and the days remembered with fondness. I'm Babs and Paula was my sister. We both skated at that rink so many times it did feel like home. The little town was friendly and safe. The good ol days. Wish I could hear from some of y'all.

Hey John Marshall !! Did Bill Dozer happen to marry a girl named Hester??
I believe she was the city clerk in Opa locka when I was a policeman there and my Dad was a friend of Bill's at Miami-Dade Jr. College?

I am looking for my very old friend Sue Sachs, who I used to go skating with at least 2 to 3 times a week. She lived in Opa Locka along with her cousins the "Clayton Girls". Any of you know them please post and I will recheck as think about those wonderful days in the 1960's when we would eat at Penmans before skating . Penny

Thank you Janet, and all the others who have commented, for posting your memories here. I appreciate it and it gives much additional insight to what life was like back then. That's important for historical purposes for those in the future who are interested in history and it helps others our age remember their own youthful experiences. I hope more folks will post their memories to give even more insight into life in the 1940's through the 1960's. Keep up the good work! : )

Harold, no we did not use regular skates like at home. We used shoe skates with the fiberglass wheels, the floor was coated with a rubberized coating over the cement. I skated there from the time it opened in 1953 to 1959. I was there almost everyday. Along with John Marshall, Alta Whipple, Marilyn Stevens, Nancy Smith, Bob Morales, and many more. The under age Marines that did not go to Bars, skated there also. We played hockey with brooms, raced and figure skating. We skated to all the oldies, 50's music.

I Lived in the rink, I believe it was 1970. I played hockey with the guys after closing and I slept in the skate room. Ahh the days, skating backwards to Tommy James' Draggin the Line.

Skated here from 1954 to 1958, once or twice a week, along with the rest of my gang: Frank Pope, Bill Dozer, Gayle, Donna, Paula, Barbara. Have lost track of all our lady skating mates. Roller hockey with broomsticks and softballs, and the races were a hit.
