1961 - Sister John Kevin and the St. Mary's Parochial School's Volley Ball Team (names below)

St. Mary's Parochial School, Miami, Florida

Thank you to my longtime friend Sylvia Carmellini Spader for contributing this great old image of the St. Mary's Volley Ball Team coached by Sr. John Kevin. Sylvia wrote these names on the back of the photo but now she can't place the names with the faces: Tara Gioia, Anna Castro and Janice Fisher.

Thanks to Kathy Kokus and Tom Seigel the young ladies are, left to right, identified as: Colleen Mathews, Bonnie ??, Kathy Kokus, Joy (Ford) Seigel (Tom's sister), Doris Frazek, Sister JK, Joan Gillis, Alexis Nagy, Arlene Lejuene (not sure), Jane Moran, and Bernadette Flynn. See Kathy's and Tom's comments below.

Prior to the above paragraph we gave thanks to Bill Sullivan for contributing these names, starting on the left:
Bernadette Flynn, Jane Moran, unknown, unknown, Joan Gillis, Sr. John Kevin, unknown, unknown, Kathleen Kokus, unknown and unknown. See Bill's comments below.

Rosie, you and I were probably in the same first grade class at St. Mary's. I had a different 2nd grade teacher (Mrs. Phillips) and 3rd and 4th grade teachers than you but I'm pretty sure I had Sister Rafael for first grade. Thank you for writing in and for your comments.

OMG. I stumbled onto this site as I was hoping to find some pictures for our ACND 50th. This photo of the UNDEFEATED volleyball team is priceless. I was home sick the day this was taken and I was pissed at Sr. K for letting them take the photo. What a brat I must have been.

Paul E. Tousignant - Yes I remember Father Fogarty. He also was Pastor at a parish in Mirimar, Fla.. I can remember when I, Leonard Cusano, and his mother Delia who use to work in the school office would go and visit Father Fogarty in Mirimar. Does anyone remember Father Pick? Couldn't believe how tall he was. He must have been at least 6 feet 7 inches tall! No lie either. This is a great web site!! Would like to see more comments from students who graduated in 1963!

Kathleen and all Y'All SMS veterans: Sister John Kevin shared a deep secret with me while I was her 8th grade student. Her "real" name was Phyllis O'Sullivan, and that was why she continuously refered to me as "Mister O'Sullivan", often while punching the hell out of my upper arm for doing (or not doing) whatever. We laughed about those days when I spoke with her on the phone in 2006. Was going to gather my friends from SMS, George Olortegui and Gene Liotta to take her out to lunch, but the plan failed to materialize before a job transfer forced my move West.

Kathy Kokus, your parents house was on N.W. 4th Avenue (not 4th Street). We lived next door on 75th Street. I remember struggling, along with my older sister, Suzanne, trying to cut down a tree that had fallen down in our backyard during a hurricane. Your brother, George, saw us struggling and he came over and sawed the tree in seconds, then continued on his way to evening Mass. I heard that George is an Attorney and he's still in Miami. Everyone in my family (3 sisters and 1 brother) went to SMS from K-8. Suzanne didn't go to Kindergarten at SMS, because at that time there was no Kindergarten. Instead, Suzanne went to a private Kindergarten on 79th Street, East of Biscayne Boulevard and her teacher was Mrs. Sites. A year later, Mrs. Sites became the FIRST Kindergarten teacher at St. Mary's School and she remained there FOREVER!! We went to Notre Dame after SMS and my brother went to Curley. I married a Miami Edison graduate (Class of 1967), Bill Edmonds. Bill's Mom was the Treasurer at Edison High and Bill's sister, Dorothy, aka Dee Dee, graduated from Edison in 1965. Dee Dee married her junior high school sweetheart, who also graduated from Edison in 1965, his name is Tom Siemianowski. We've all been married FOREVER!! I saw Sr. John Kevin in St. Augustine in 2009 at a Jubilee Celebration for Sisters of St. Joseph. There were two Sisters who taught at SMS who were celebrating Jubilees, Sr. Ann Bernadette, now known as Sr. Kathleen Power (50 years of service) and Sr. Ann Patrice (60 years of service). Sr. John Kevin left the convent, but remained a teacher. Her name is Phyllis and she lives in Jacksonville. Can't recall her last name right now! But I have a couple of pictures of her somewhere, from the 2009 Jubilee celebration! I recognize MOST of the girls above, as they were in my sister, Suzanne's class. The names that Kathy Kokus an Tom Seigel provided, are CORRECT. I believe Jane Moran married Douglas Fradley!

Hi Kathy and Tom: thank you for writing in and identifying the young ladies. I'm changing the description above to hopefully have all the names correct.

Hi Don, and Bill Sullivan! I'm Kathy Kokus, one of my twin brothers, Joe Kokus, found this site ...and we just about went back to the future ..having fun, trying to remember everyone from back then !!! .... Joe was 6 grades ahead of me.....Joe and Tom went to Curley.... and then there was my next older brother ..George Kokus... he grad in 59, then went to Curley .... St Mary's was our whole life back then...I attended from 1954 to 61 and Miami Edison 62-66... I was impressed that Bill remembered my full name!! but can't seem to place who Bill is? ... Back to the picture!!! ....looking at the photo, the girl on the left was 1 Colleen ?... 2 u/k...3 of course me! ..4 u/k ..5 Doris ? ...6 Sister JK ..7 Gillis, 8 u/k ... not sure but maybe 9 Arlene? ...I can picture Sister JK rolling up her sleeves and showing us how its done...She sure had alot of energy under all material!! We were in awe of her...! The 1st "COOL" NUN that I met... she had left a lasting impression on me......We use to live just 4 block from the Church on 4th st, and all 3 of my brothers were alter boys...My Mom and me always helped out at the rectory when needed, ...And don't forget, that was before the New Church was built.... Do you remember how sweet and small the old church look liked? ....oh yeh, what about when the dome was tiled, and the tiles kept falling off for ages, !!! I probably still have a few of them left!! ... Wow, could go on forever, but I'm not too far away from Miami , just in the Tampa Bay Area... tried to move out of Fla, but it wasn't sunny enough, so moved back... Does anyone remember the MT Graves matinees on Sat afternoon...with 5 bottle caps..? Thanks for the memories, they were some great times there... God Bless you all, and stay safe.... your classmate, Kathy

Thanks Bill, I added the names above but was uncertain if you meant as we are looking at them or to her actual left and right. If I screwed up let me know. Thanks.

Yes, it's hard to believe that almost 50 years have passed since the date of the photo. It's like a bad dream that time has passed so quickly. : (

Let me help with the ID's: Fairly certain the 3rd girl to Sister's right is Kathleen Kokus. On Sister JK's immediate left is Joan Gillis. The 4th from Sister's left is Jane Moran, and last on Sister's left is Bernadette Flynn. I spoke with Sister John Kevin 3 years ago - she lives in Jacksonville, Florida. Hasn't been a Nun for years, but still a devout Catholic. If you remember her, you also (really) remember "Father" Fogerty, who is Monsignor Fogarty now. He's the Pastor of the parish in Plantation, FL, near the Broward Mall. Wow. That photo is almost 50 years old!

BTW Tara did coach the girls volleyball team for a few year in the early 80s.

Tara Gioia is my sister. She graduated in 1970. Ana Castro graduated with my brother John Gioia in 1973. Neither one of them are in this picture. Great photos!
