The camp in Flamingo Park was mostly Vietnam Veterans Against the War and they had a permit to be there. That didn't matter. The last night of the convention I saw the SWAT Team march south down Alton Road. They were headed towards Flamingo Park where they busted as many Vietnam Vets as they could lay their hands on. The police trashed the camp doing as much damage as they could.

A bunch of self-typed patriots beating up Vietnam Vets, arresting them, and trashing their belongings. A snap shot of America at the time.

I remember the old folks living in apartment over Lincoln Road pouring out on to the streets, pissed off at being tear gassed (far more upset than the protester).

What a strange time. In 1968 I was making signs for "The New Nixon" at the convention, in 1972 I was out side the convention center protesting Tricky Dick.

AS AN ITHACA GAS MASK ADVOCTE AND GAS MASK OWNER, I REMEMBER A FEMALE FIRST AID WORKING WEARING AN M17 GAS MASK ASSISTING THOSE EXPOSED TO TEAR GAS

THE CONSTRAST WAS STARK--THE FEMALE FIRST AID WORKER WEARING THE M17 GAS MASK WAS IMMUNE TO THE STINING AND IRRITATING EFFECTS OF TEAR GAS

INNOCENT BYSTANDERS WITHOUT GAS MASKS FELT THE AGONY OF TEAR GAS--TEARY, BURNING EYES; RUNNY NOSES; COUGHING AND SNEEZING OF CS GAS

We went there one night during the covention and you couldn't get within a half a mile of the Convention Center--there were police/National Guard/tanks everywhere. Found out in later years that some of the so called hippies in Flamingo Park were actually under cover FBI/CIA/etc. The major sad part of Nixon's election was:
His main campaign slogan was "I have a secret plan to end the war." Well he actually escalated the war and more troops/civilians were killed under his watch than during LBJ's era.

Actually, now that I remember, it was not the high school teams it was the football and cheerleading teams from Nor-Isle Optimist Club.

I lived across the street from Flamingo Park during the Democratic Convention. I was 15 and my friends and I got dressed up as cool as our wardrobes would allow and went across the street to hang with all the hippies in the big open field. Great fun and thank goodness we didn't get caught by my Mom! The ballpark was actually just to the north on Michigan Avenue. Our high school football team and cheerleading team used to practice in the big field.

i was about 4 years old when this occured, and I remember Nixon appearing outside of the convention center at which time a riot broke out and we were teargassed. I remember being with dad, when the teargas came out, we ran (he grabbed me), and I remember fining a wallet that we later returned to the owner. I also have some great old movies that dad took with me of the Flamingo Park ballfield that was turned into a hippie camp.
