1963 - aerial view of Hialeah Speedway in Hialeah and Palmetto Speedway in Medley

Hialeah and Medley, Florida

The interchanges of the Palmetto at NW 74th Street and Okeechobee Road can be seen on the left side with new bridges over the former grade level crossing at NW 74th Street. These interchanges were recently rebuilt by the Florida Department of Transportation and now one interchange in each direction serves both NW South River Drive and Okeechobee Road instead of individual interchanges for each.

The amount of vacant land visible in this photo is incredible to see now that almost every square inch has been paved over.

other sizes: small medium original auto

It looks like the Disabled American Veterans chapter 43 building is well under way. It would be in the road entrance to the Hialeah Speedway. The DAV used to park cars for the Saturday races at the Speedway. I spent many a Saturday night there with my dad, Joe Caruana, who often worked "the bucket" for parking donations.

Like old photos, let us pray that it was sold off to someone who appreciates it and not tossed in the garbage to now occupy a landfill. Thank you for posting.

Spent many a Saturday night sitting in the stands watching the roundy rounds. Best short track local racing I ever saw. Anyone remember "The Colonel"? He was the guy with the old beat up Ford wrecker that towed you off the track after you crashed. He lived down the street from me in Hialeah and his house was filled to the top with old speed equipment. Wonder who has his stuff how?
