The Snapped Camera Head and Wires Holding It Together.jpg

The problem with your husband's packaging, was that he did not add layer upon layer of bubblewrap to protect this item. When shipping delicate but large objects, one tried and true approach is to wrap 1" bubblewrap around the item, taping it tightly at all joints, after cushioning projecting parts of the unit with urethane foam. Then, wrap the item with the bubblewrap the other way, working in this manner, adding layer upon layer, to fully protect every surface and every projection while. These object document cameras have a great weakness in design, in that the rather heavy camera head is attached to a thin column, which supports the head while in use. This camera head, when disassembled for storage or moving, rests on the viewing table with the camera head extending beyond the viewing table. Shipping an item of such bulk, with one of the most important and delicate elements of the unit away from the protection of the rest of the unit, would necessitate using not only a bigger container (which would allow a minimum of 2" clearance around the bubblewrapped unit for space to layer styrene peanuts) which also should have been a double walled B/C flute corrugated container, instead of the piecemeal corrugated taped together assembly that you called a box.
