During the settlement period of Texas many missions and forts sprang up.
All across the state forts were needed to protect settlers from natives.
Roads were opened and the forts were about a days ride apart.
Texas also had a Camino Real that connected the different missions.
In many cases missions became forts as more settlers moved into Texas.
