The Alaskan cruise industry is back in full force after a hiatus in 2020 and 2021.
They travel in packs of two (for safety), heading up and down the coast of British Columbia.
We are fortunate to have a view of Discovery Passage, which is part of their route.
While these huge ships are impressive and photogenic, they have a negative impact on the environment.
They consume huge amounts of fuel and therefore spew tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, they can carry over 3,000 people (passengers and crew) and therefore are akin to a
small city in terms of waste products. Almost all of this waste ends up in the ocean. I was annoyed to
read that Canada has laxer dumping laws than the US, and consequently these ships hold tight when
around Washington and Alaska, but let loose off the coast of British Columbia.
