New sign at the Quathiaski Cove Ferry Terminal

Currently there is one ferry, the Powell River Queen, that connects
Quadra Island to the city of Campbell River on Vancouver Island.
The sailing takes about 10 minutes, and it makes a round trip
every hour. The Powell River Queen has capacity for 59 vehicles.

About one year from now the Powell River Queen will be replaced
with two ferries, each with capacity for 47 vehicles. When one
is going to Campbell River, the other will be coming to Quadra.
I don't know if they will stick to the schedule of a round trip
every hour, but if they do, traffic will be increased from
59 to 94 vehicles per hour each way.

As indicated on the sign, these ferries are electric-hybrid.
However it sounds like they will initially run on fossil fuels.
More funding is required for the charging infrastructure.

What will happen to the Powell River Queen? I don't know.
It was built in 1965, so next year it will be 57 years old.
It is a very handsome vessel, in my opinion.
Much better looking that these new ones.
There are a few photos of it below in
this gallery.

It looks fancy. I really hope they can limit the fossil fuels used.

That looks very swish.

Interesting that they build the ferries before having "funding and infrastructure" in place for "full electric operation". I would not want to be dependent on the ferry. Had enough of that when I used to live in England and drive to Germany once a month on the Dover-Calais Ferry.

Progress? No matter, I look forward to seeing it. Hopefully by 2022, COVID will be a distant memory and we can travel again. V

I agree with David. A step in the right direction. Looking to the hybrid-technology applied in cars it seems already obsolete.

Sounds like they're both good and bad for the island. I do think the Powell River Queen is more attractive than this, though.

Progress I guess !! I wonder if the Power River Queen used to run between Powell River and Campbell River ? It was a ferry of the same size and we got caught in a storm mid way - it was quite frightening !!(this was a long time ago !!)

that's a step in the right direction, and will be better when full electriication is achieved...more passengers too, so you will have more tourists with the increased effieiency, whether you want them or not...good they run quieter though, meaning less of an audio assault on marine life particulalry whales..
