Some generous soul who didn't like the idea of private beaches donated a big chunk of land on Small Point in Phippsburg to Bates for research purposes. It is open to the public as long as you follow all these rules. You get there by turning right at Bath before going over the river, and going almost out to the end of the road. Popham is out on the same point.

The two-mile road goes across Sprague Marsh, climbs 1000 feet over part of Morse Mountain, and then descends back to the ocean.
