Black Witch Moth (?)

San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize

I think this is a Ascalapha odorata. It is a nocturnal moth and this one was photographed in a very dark area inside an ancient Mayan building at the Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve. My wife was freaking out because she worried that I would catch some disease just from being around the bats that were also inside the structure though they were not flying around. There are all sorts of superstitions regarding these moths.

The moth has wonderful, intricate patterning, like a rich but subtle tapestry.

They are cool moths. As I recall (from MANY years ago) they have found occasionally a far north as the Chesapeake Bay in the US.
