The Winchester Mansion or Winchester Mystery Museum as it is sometimes called is a fascinating house. After the deaths of her husband and child, Mrs. Sarah Winchester was told by a psychic in Boston that she must continually build a house to keep the spirits of those killed with guns manufactured by her husband away. Thus, at this mansion carpenters worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 38 years. There are a few stairways to nowhere, cabinets that go down hallways, nooks and crannies everywhere, and a doorway to nowhere. After the 1906 earthquake which she thought was a punishment of the fact that she has almost completed her building, she shut down building in the destroyed part of the house and started building onto other areas. Many said that she was eccentric, but after viewing the house, I believe that she actually had plans for those stairs and doorways that go nowhere. We will never know now though.
