This years volunteer divers were from West Islip Fire Department Scuba Team and Bayshore Dive Team,NY and Vernon Fire Department, NJ. When we train dogs for water searches, we first introduce the dogs to the divers in full gear. Then the dogs are taken for a ride in one of the small search boats. Finally the divers go beneath the water and the dogs sniff the surface for human scent. When the dogs find the source of the scent on the surface, they indicate to their handler that they have a find. Some dogs are trained to bark or paw at the water. Some of the newbies jump overboard in their excitement. Stick play after the find is the reward.
