Top Ten Reasons I Love Living in My Neighborhood
It’s hard to limit it to just ten, but here’s my list. What’s yours?
1. Location: in the heart of San Diego, near everything.
If you can’t walk to it, it’s a short drive away. The beach, Balboa Park,
the zoo, downtown, and so much more is just minutes away.
2. Climate: not as foggy as the coastal communities, with a wonderful
temperate climate that rarely begs for an air conditioner in summer, and
isn’t quite too cold in winter.
3. Park Boulevard: our few blocks of Park Boulevard have so much to
offer — including the best casual Mexican restaurant in San Diego, the
best coffee shop, plus live theatre, nightlife, terrific delis, you name it.
4. The architecture: Old Victorians, cozy bungalows, even some new
modern buildings, all blending together in an eclectic way that’s so
much more fulfilling than the ticky-tacky neighborhoods in newer neighborhoods.
5. The convenience: I walk (or ride my bike) to all sorts of things:
the library, Henrys, several restaurants. Even my auto repair shop is
just a couple of blocks away.
6. The diversity: we have it all. And we seem to get along pretty darn well.
7. The lack of pretension. University Heights isn’t the most expensive
place in San Diego, and not the most sophisticated either. It’s real people,
regular people, living together and taking pride in our neighborhood.
8. It’s a great place for a walk: I love walking around University Heights
and looking at all the different homes, apartments, commercial buildings, and
people. And it’s safe to walk here day or night. And people actually say “Hi!” when they pass you.
9. It’s a great place to ride a bike. I’m a cyclist, and I love being
able to ride right out my front door, and within minutes be almost anywhere
I want to ride. A great Saturday or Sunday morning is spent riding down to
Harbor Island, or out to the lighthouse on Point Loma, and back.
10. The Barber of Seville: yep, he’s now my barber, he’s only a couple
blocks away, he’s been cutting hair for forty years, and he’s a wise, gentle man.
